Awareness
One of the elements of the Life of Riley
Foundation mission is to create a greater Awareness of the magnitude
of pediatric brain tumors. For example, few people are aware that:
- Brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer death in children under
the age of 20, now surpassing acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
More than 185,000 people in the United
States will be diagnosed this year with a primary or metastic brain
tumor.
Because brain tumors are located at the
control center for thought, emotion and movement, their effects on an
individual's physical and cognitive abilities can be devastating.
Brain tumors in children are different
from those in adults and are often treated differently. 40% of children
diagnosed with a brain tumor do not survive beyond five years after
diagnosis.
Brain tumors are reported to be on the
rise, increasing at an alarming rate of 30%, over the past two decades.
The need to raise awareness about statistics
like these coupled with the fight to reverse them are the reason for
the Life of Riley Foundation's Awareness campaign. Awareness will be
promoted through every special event, publicity piece and volunteer
activity funded through the Foundation.
