“Sarasota’s Oldest Prime Meat Market and Steakhouse” - Sarasota Herald-TribuneKarl Ehmer’s Alpine Steakhouse (and Meat Market)4520 South Tamiami Trail Sarasota, Florida 34231 Phone: (941) 922-3797 ![]() For the first time since I started visiting restaurants, and I guess we’ve done about 70, Karl Ehmer’s is the first one that we went to on a Thursday, went back on a Saturday night and twice the following week, plus lunch one day. Visiting this family operated establishment is an experience. The left half of the building as you walk in is an old-time meat market with a meat case from one end of the building to another, displaying the many imported meats and cheeses that are available. The other half is an attractive area of red booths with curtains above the top of the booth to ensure privacy. The reason for our frequent returns was that the menu is so extensive that you can keep dining here for a long time without repeating. Some of the things we’ve had are an outstanding onion soup “Marion’s opinion,” brisket that you an cut with the back of your fork, fabulous braised beef ribs on the bone served on top of broad noodles with cabbage. Of course, the steaks are really outstanding, particularly the filet mignon. The steaks are hand-cut from Iowa beef. At the same time, the tender milk-fed veal comes from Wisconsin. Even though it is a steakhouse, they do a great job with chicken and fish, which includes a very tasty Chicken Marsala, an fish of many varieties, which includes a very good Snapper Francese. There are no frills, because the placemat is the menu and includes a whole variety of German dishes such as Weiner Schnitzel, Sauerbraten and Hungarian Goulash. Don’t forget the sauerkraut (imported from Germany) that is available with any dish. One of the outstanding features of this restaurant is that they make their own potato chips, and they will make them with a minimum amount of salt if requested. These are a must, and if you have any left, you take them home in a brown paper bag. Price range for entrees is $14 to $28. Your entrée includes your choice of either their signature gorgonzola salad served in chilled metal bowl or homemade soup with a different choice of soup everyday; you can’t go wrong with either one. This Karl Ehmer restaurant is truly a family affair. It was started 30 years ago by Henry Rebhan who came to this country as a baker, and then management was taken over by his son, Mark, and at the present, Mark has turned the reigns over to his son Matt, who is a very capable young man. Featured at the market and restaurant is all kinds of imported beer. I particularly enjoy the Belgian beer. We could go on for many pages on the merits of this wonderful restaurant, but I think by now you have the idea of how I feel about it. On Saturday morning, they have a stand at the downtown farmer's market, near First and Lemon, where they have many of their imported meat items for sale, as well as items they make specially for this Saturday morning market. This includes a very special type chicken, which they don’t offer in the restaurant, and it sells out so they have to keep making more each Saturday. To prove what a family affair this is, on Saturday at the stand, Mark is aided by his wife Donna, who many people will recognize as Dr. Randy Hartman’s right-hand. |
